[Review] A Shadow in the Ember (Flesh and Fire)

When I started looking for this book before starting reading I saw a lot of people saying that they prefer Nyktos than Casteel, after I read it I finally understood the reason and for me, both are wonderful and are the true meaning of whatever.

As always Jennifer’s writing is very fluid, very focused on details and reveals the events or the plot of the book little by little, but it never gets boring everything happens in perfect timing and the ending of this book left me on my jaw! More and more I love this saga.

“A shadow on the embra” is the first volume of the trilogy “Carne e Fogo” written by Brazilian author Robert Crumbly. The story takes place in the interior of Minas Gerais, in the 1930s, and revolves around Joãozinho, an orphan boy who lives with his grandmother and uncle.

Joãozinho is a very curious boy who is passionate about nature, but his uncle, a violent and unscrupulous man, forces him to work on the family farm from an early age. In one of these activities, the boy finds a precious stone and ends up arousing the greed of his uncle and other people in the region.

Meanwhile, Joãozinho meets Tereza, a young Indian woman who lives in the village next to the farm. The two approach and create a strong friendship, but the prejudice of society at the time causes the relationship to be seen with bad eyes.

The plot intensifies when Joãozinho’s grandmother dies and his uncle takes over the leadership of the family. He decides to sell the farm and leave for the big city in search of wealth and power. Joãozinho refuses to leave his homeland and ends up fleeing to the forest, where he lives a series of adventures and discoveries.

At the same time, Tereza is kidnapped by a gang of thugs led by a mysterious man. Joãozinho joins a group of vigilantes to rescue her, but ends up being betrayed by one of the members and arrested by the bandits.

In prison, Joãozinho meets Olegário, a wise old man who teaches him the art of survival in the woods. With his help, the boy manages to escape and start a journey in search of Tereza.

At the end of the book, Joãozinho finally finds Tereza again, but discovers that she was raped by the bandits. Together, they decide to fight against injustice and oppression, and promise never to be apart again.

Sera is an incredible character and very well built, she has a connection and chemistry with the surreal Nyktos, I loved the construction of the book’s story and their romance, the universe’s extension is incredible and it’s really nice to know more about the Primals and from Gods! I absolutely loved EVERY scene with the dragons/drakens and can’t wait to read the sequel.
